Can I just talk for a second about how FUCKING RIDICULOUS this rioting is? The proposed tuition hikes will bring their rates up to around $3500-$4000.
Guess what, asshats? Here in Ontario we pay more than $6000. SUCK IT THE FUCK UP AND ACCEPT THAT YOU DON’T DESERVE SPECIAL TREATMENT.
Yeah, it sucks. I feel your pain, really. But rioting over this just makes you look really, REALLY bad.
I’m losing a lot of respect for Quebec students these days.
There’s a lot of people voting in favor of the strike (myself included) who don’t have a problem with the tuition fees specifically, but with the completely false claim that there’s no other way to finance universities. I get that for some it’s an ideological fight, and I respect that, but for a lot of us it’s a political position. There’s terrible financial management in every university and yes, the losses aren’t as big as they are in other provinces, but I don’t think “suck it up and accept that the system is corrupt” is the way to go.
That being said, rioting is ridiculous, as are most acts of violence or vandalism, but what the media often fail to report is that the vast majority of protests organized by and involving students were entirely peaceful, and that the very few “riots” were caused by independent activists against the government (as opposed to “regular students” on strike) and police brutality.
I have a lot of respect for the real activists behind the student movement, the people who get out there and challenge the government in their positions even when it puts their education at stake. It’s a bold move. Some aren’t doing it the right way, and some aren’t doing it for the right reasons—like in every social movement. But I don’t think that wanting something better (and cheaper!) for future generations, wanting better accessibility to higher education, is something we should be ashamed of. The cause is just. And if you think your tuition fees are too high, you, as a citizen, have the right to voice your opinion and make things change.
